Pre-Marital Health Check-Up in Chennai
A confidential pre-marital health check-up for couples before marriage — blood group, thalassaemia carrier screening, infection tests and optional fertility checks, explained by Dr. Rukkayal so you start married life with clear answers, not worries.

A pre-marital health check-up is a set of simple blood tests and, where useful, a few fertility checks that a couple does before marriage. It answers the questions families often worry about quietly — Are we both healthy? Could we pass on a blood disorder such as thalassaemia? Is there any infection to treat first? Will we be able to have children? — with facts, in a private consultation. Dr. Rukkayal Fathima, fertility specialist and founder of Yaal Fertility and Women's Centre, offers structured pre-marital check-ups for couples across Chennai, with blood samples, scans and semen analysis available at all seven Yaal centres.
The core of the check-up is the same for both partners: blood group and Rh type, a complete blood count, screening for thalassaemia and sickle cell trait, tests for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and syphilis, blood sugar, thyroid function and a urine test — plus rubella immunity for the woman. Couples who want to know more about future fertility can add an AMH test and pelvic ultrasound for her and a semen analysis for him. What makes the consultation useful is the interpretation, not the test list. Most results are normal; when one is not, it is rarely a reason not to marry. A Rh-negative bride needs a simple injection during pregnancy, not a different partner. Two thalassaemia carriers can plan healthy children with prenatal or embryo testing. An infection found early can be treated before marriage. Results are discussed with the couple, shared only with their consent, and turned into a clear plan.

What Is a Pre-Marital Health Check-Up?
A pre-marital health check-up — also called a premarital screening or pre-wedding medical test — is a voluntary health screen for both partners before marriage. In India it is most valuable for three reasons. First, carrier screening: thalassaemia and sickle cell trait are common in many Indian communities and usually cause no symptoms, so a person can be a carrier without knowing it. When both partners are carriers, each pregnancy has a one-in-four chance of a child with a serious blood disorder — which can be planned for if it is known in advance. Second, infection screening: HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and syphilis can be silent, and finding them before marriage protects both partners and future children. Third, fertility readiness: an AMH test, pelvic scan and semen analysis give an early picture of reproductive health, which is especially useful for couples marrying later or with irregular periods, PCOS or a known medical condition. Couples who are related by blood (cousin or uncle–niece marriages, still seen in Tamil Nadu) benefit most from genetic counselling, because the chance of both partners carrying the same recessive gene is higher. A pre-marital check-up is different from preconception care, which prepares an already married couple in the months before they try to conceive.
What a Pre-Marital Check-Up Covers
Our Pre-Marital Health Check Services
Core Pre-Marital Blood Panel
Blood group and Rh type, complete blood count, fasting blood sugar and HbA1c, thyroid function and urine routine for both partners, rubella immunity for her, and liver or kidney tests where your history calls for them.
Thalassaemia & Sickle Cell Carrier Screening
A haemoglobin variant test (HPLC / HbA2) to find silent carriers. If both partners are carriers, Dr. Rukkayal explains the options — prenatal testing in pregnancy or embryo testing (PGT-M) with IVF — so you can plan healthy children.
Infection Screening
Tests for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and syphilis, with Hepatitis B vaccination advice where needed and treatment or specialist referral if anything is found.
Fertility-Readiness Check (Optional)
AMH and a pelvic ultrasound for her, and a semen analysis for him, for couples who want an early picture of fertility — useful when marrying later, with irregular periods or PCOS, or with a past medical or surgical history.
Genetic & Family-History Counselling
A private discussion for couples who are related by blood or have a family history of an inherited condition, explaining what the risk means and which tests are worth doing.
Why Choose Dr. Rukkayal?
- A fertility specialist and obstetrician reads your results — so a finding is explained in terms of marriage, pregnancy and future children, not just a lab range.
- MRCOG (UK) and FRM (Germany) trained, with evidence-based test selection — only the tests that are useful for your situation.
- Strict confidentiality — results are discussed with the couple and shared with family only with your consent.
- Non-judgemental counselling for thalassaemia carriers, Rh-negative blood group and consanguineous couples.
- Blood samples, ultrasound and semen analysis available at all 7 Yaal Fertility centres she founded — Kilpauk, Red Hills, Velappanchavadi, Mylapore, Thiruvanmiyur, Pallikaranai and Madipakkam.
- A clear pathway onwards — preconception care after marriage, and fertility evaluation if it is ever needed, with the same doctor.
Your Treatment Journey
Couple Consultation
A private conversation with both partners about health history, family history, any blood relationship between families and what you want to know — so the test list fits you.
Blood Tests & Optional Fertility Checks
Come after an 8–12 hour overnight fast (water is fine) with any previous reports. Blood and urine samples are collected at the centre, with AMH, pelvic ultrasound and semen analysis if you choose the fertility-readiness check.
Results Review Together
Dr. Rukkayal goes through every report with the couple, explains what is normal, and what any abnormal result actually means for marriage and future pregnancy.
Plan for Anything Found
Treatment for infections or anaemia, vaccination advice, thyroid or sugar control, and — for carrier couples — a clear plan for safe pregnancy using prenatal or embryo testing.
Bridge to Preconception Care
When you are ready to start a family after marriage, your results carry forward into a preconception plan, so nothing is repeated unnecessarily.

Frequently Asked Questions
The core tests for both partners are blood group and Rh type, complete blood count, thalassaemia and sickle cell carrier screening, HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, syphilis (VDRL), blood sugar and thyroid function. Optional fertility tests are AMH and a pelvic ultrasound for the woman and semen analysis for the man. Dr. Rukkayal suggests only the tests that are useful for your history.
No. It is voluntary in Tamil Nadu and most of India. Many couples and families choose it because it answers important questions — about blood disorders, infections and fertility — before marriage, when there is time to plan.
Thalassaemia carriers usually feel completely healthy, so most do not know they carry the trait. If both partners are carriers, each pregnancy has a one-in-four chance of a child with thalassaemia major, a serious blood disorder. Knowing before marriage lets the couple plan — with prenatal testing during pregnancy or embryo testing (PGT-M) with IVF — to have healthy children.
Fast for 8 to 12 hours overnight before a morning visit; water is fine. Bring any previous reports and a list of medicines you take. Blood and urine samples are collected at the centre.
It is optional. An AMH test and pelvic ultrasound give a picture of egg reserve and the uterus and ovaries, and a semen analysis checks sperm count and movement. These are most useful for couples marrying after 30, women with irregular periods or PCOS, and anyone with past surgery, infection or a known medical condition. A normal result is reassuring; an abnormal one is a reason to plan early, not a verdict.
Yes. Results are discussed with the couple and are not shared with parents or relatives without your consent. Many couples choose to share them together after the consultation, once they understand what each result means.
Ideally two to three months before the wedding. That leaves time for results, a repeat test if one is borderline, Hepatitis B vaccination if needed, and treatment of anything that is found — without last-minute stress.
A pre-marital check-up is done before marriage and focuses on compatibility, carrier status, infections and an early look at fertility. Preconception care is done after marriage, in the three to six months before trying for a baby, and focuses on folic acid, controlling thyroid, sugar or blood pressure, and preparing the body for pregnancy. Your pre-marital results carry forward into preconception care.
