In most cases, the inability to make a timely diagnosis of the illness is the cause of infertility in women. This is a situation I wish to avoid at all costs. Ultrasound is the best diagnostic method for issues regarding the uterus and other reproductive organs. Ultrasound, otherwise known as sonography or ultrasonography (USG), is a diagnostic method that uses sound waves to produce images of the inner structure of your body.
Ultrasound scans do not emit radiation, so they do not harm the body. Ultrasound is the first test I would take for patients who come to me with infertility issues. I mainly focus on the below tests for diagnosis related to infertility.

Follicular monitoring
Follicular monitoring is a series of ultrasound tests done to monitor the ovarian follicles that are ready for ovulation. This test plays an integral part in assisted reproductive techniques like IVF, where the eggs must be collected from the female uterus.
Before an egg retrieval procedure, the female is prescribed specific medication that can stimulate the production of more eggs at once. Monitoring the follicles for the development of the eggs is an essential part of the process. This test will help determine the dosage of the medication and when the eggs are ready to be collected.
Abdominal ultrasound
Abdominal ultrasound is an ultrasound imaging procedure that uses sound waves to evaluate the organs inside the upper abdomen. This test is done when a patient experiences pain or discomfort in the kidneys, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, bile ducts, spleen, and abdominal aorta.
This procedure is non-invasive and uses a probe called ‘transducer’ with a gel applied directly on the body. It can diagnose pathologies like liver diseases, pancreatic and splenic pathologies, kidney and gallbladder stones, bowel pathologies, tumours, ascites, uterine and ovarian lesions, and many other conditions.
Transvaginal ultrasound
Transvaginal means ‘through the vagina’. Transvaginal or endovaginal ultrasound is a type of pelvic ultrasound used to examine the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, vagina, cervix, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.
This test helps diagnose disorders like miscarriage or premature delivery, ectopic pregnancy, routine pregnancy cysts, pelvic infections, and fibroids.
Unlike abdominal ultrasound, this procedure uses an ultrasound probe of 2 to 3 inches that is inserted directly into the vaginal canal. This instrument produces sound waves that bounce off the organs inside the pelvis.
Saline sonogram
Saline infusion sonography (SIS) or sonohysterography is a minimally invasive ultrasound procedure to examine the inside of the uterus. This test can help diagnose conditions like uterine fibroids, scarring inside the uterus, uterine cancer, uterine polyps, tubal patency, and tubal pathologies.
During this procedure, a transducer covered with a disposable sheath and coated with a special gel is placed in the patient’s vagina. A thin catheter is inserted into the vagina, releasing a salty fluid called saline. This saline helps to visualise the uterine cavity, fallopian tubes, and peritoneal cavity.
